The History
At a partners lunch (London vintners Berry Bros. & Rudd) with a well-known Scottish artist, James McBey, the question of a name for the new blend was discussed. McBey suggested 'Cutty Sark, after the speedy clipper-ship The idea held and McBey designed and painted the original label, which is still used today. Cutty Sark was one of the last clippers built for the China tea trade at Shanghai between the 1840s and 1870s .Cutty Sark has had tremendous international renown since 1923 when the London vintners Berry Bros. & Rudd, Ltd., named their blended Scotch whisky Cutty Sark. James Mcbey (1883-1959) born in Abeerdeen, made his reputation as an etcher, and served as official artist in the First World War.
